Allecia Wilson, MD Announced Program Director

Effective immediately, Dr. Allecia Wilson is the Program Director for the Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency Program. Dr. Wilson completed residency here at Michigan, followed by Forensic Pathology and later Pediatric Pathology fellowships. One of the 2016 recipients is House Officer III, Stephanie Skala, MD. “Best Poster Award” Given at 2016 ASCP

Congratulations to the Department of Pathology's David Manthei, MD, PhD, House Officer III, for winning the "Best Poster Award" at the 2016 ASCP Annual meeting in Las Vegas. His poster on "Predictive value of hypogammaglobulinemia in monoclonal gammopathies detected by reflex immunofixation of serum protein electrophoresis samples" presented the largest study to date on the value of reflexing hypogammaglobulinemic samples for detecting monoclonal gammopathies. Scoring for the award was based on originality, potential importance, research design or implementation and interpretations.

Each year, The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) awards exemplary medical students at schools in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, with the Academic Excellence and Achievement Award.

Awardees are determined based on their excellence in academics, leadership ability, and a strong interest in the pathology profession.

New mechanism discovered in bacterial pneumonia

Congratulations to the Department of Pathology's Mike Bachman, MD, PhD, for his recent paper in the journal mBio about the bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae, the third most common cause of infections in hospitalized patients. His work has identified siderophores, an iron-scavenging product of those bacteria, as a mechanism the bacteria use to help them invade throughout the body.
