New mechanism discovered in bacterial pneumonia

By David Keren | September 14 2016

Congratulations to the Department of Pathology's Mike Bachman, MD, PhD, for his recent paper in the journal mBio about the bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae, the third most common cause of infections in hospitalized patients. His work has identified siderophores, an iron-scavenging product of those bacteria, as a mechanism the bacteria use to help them invade throughout the body. Dr. Bachman is the Associate Director of the Microbiology Laboratory.
