Resident Class of 2022 Begins Journey with Michigan Medicine

Jul 6, 2018

The Resident Class of 2022 began Orientation last week and began their formal residency training on July 1, 2018.  Since you will see their new faces around Pathology, we asked each resident two questions as a way to introduce them to you:

  • Why did you choose to do your residency in AP/CP Pathology at Michigan?
  • Tell me about something you love – professionally or personally.

As you read their responses below, you may find that you have areas of interest in common.  Feel free to reach out to them with a hand of friendship as they begin their journey with us.   One thing is for certain, your friendship and collegiality during their interviews were driving forces that led these residents to Michigan!

Margaret (Jiayun) Fang graduated from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University in Augusta, Georgia.

Why did you choose to do your residency in AP/CP Pathology at Michigan?
I chose Michigan because of the access to a wide range of resources and outstanding quality of training. Additionally, I fell in love with Ann Arbor for its atmosphere and food scene.

Why did you choose to do your residency in AP/CP Pathology at Michigan?
I chose Michigan Medicine because its pathology department is full of friendly hardworking people committed to excellence, which I believe makes this program one of the best in the country. Also, Ann Arbor is a great town to live in.

I chose Michigan Medicine because of the people - a program can be good but it takes a friendly and cooperative group to be great!

Natalia Liu joins us from Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Why did you choose to do your residency in AP/CP Pathology at Michigan?
What stood out to me about Michigan was the value placed on resident education. I wanted to train in a program where there was a good working relationship between faculty and residents, and beyond that, between the residents themselves. At Michigan, the residents seemed to truly enjoy their everyday lives at work and approached their work with enthusiasm and positivity, which was the kind of environment that I wanted to immerse myself in. I think that’s definitely a testament to the value that the department places on their education. Since I hope to incorporate teaching into my future career, it was great to see the multitude of opportunities available to be involved in teaching at Michigan. I also love the Midwest – the people are incredibly warm and friendly despite the unpredictable weather – so it was great to continue to be in the Midwest a few miles up the road from Indianapolis! It’s also fantastic to still be in a place with a lot of outdoor activities to offer and to be in a setting with a lot of cultural diversity.

If I can be outside, that’s where you’ll most likely find me: I’m a fan of long-distance road biking (it’s difficult to not feel like a graceful group of cranes when you’re zipping along in a group ride!) and hiking. My Australian Shepherd, Bernie, tags along with me on hikes and various adventures: he also keeps me on my toes at home! Our next challenge is to tackle cross-country skiing this winter! I also listen to a wide variety of music and enjoy poking around vinyl record stores and going to concerts near and far. At home, I usually have a cup of tea in hand or next to me when I’m reading my next Murakami novel, knitting, drawing, or giving Bernie a belly scratch. You might run across me trying to catch a firefly this summer or attempting to build a snow fort in the winter.

Tim Miller joins us from Loveland, Colorado.  He is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, Colorado.

Why did you choose to do your residency in AP/CP Pathology at Michigan?
I was initially drawn to Michigan because of its exemplary pathology reputation, as well as the excellent subspecialty training in my areas of interest, particularly pathology informatics. When I came to visit, I was sold by the culture and the residents, in addition to the outdoor opportunities nearby. As a native Coloradan that loves to be outside, I feel right at home in Ann Arbor. It is a place to get amazing training while enjoying the process.

I love many things in life, but perhaps none more than my family back in Colorado. I have four crazy nephews that remind me not to take myself too seriously. Their enthusiasm for new discoveries is infectious, and it encourages me to cultivate that in my life. I also love to be outside and get moving: riding my mountain bike, hiking, climbing, and especially practicing yoga, which brings me strength, length and balance. When not doing those things, I love to get inspired by podcasts (Radiolab is one of my favorites), traveling to uncomfortable places, and reading books.

Catherine Perez joins us from Bolingbrook, Illinois.  She is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, IL.

Why did you choose to do your residency in AP/CP Pathology at Michigan?
The University of Michigan had everything I wanted in a program and more. I loved the people, the program, and the opportunities here.  I am interested in forensics, so the ability to do ME cases along with hospital autopsies was a huge selling point. I also loved how nice Ann Arbor was, and only 4 hours from my home of Chicago!

I love animals. My dad is a Veterinarian and my mom an animal lover too. I currently have 2 cats, a dog, and a pet snake. I also love volunteering my time with animal shelters.   I enjoy board games and tabletop games in my spare time, along with reading and watching movies.
