Summer Medical Lab Immersion Program

This program offers college students an opportunity to see the inner workings of the medical laboratories at Michigan Medicine Department of Pathology. Students will gain experience in the medical laboratory environment while working alongside Michigan Medicine employees. Students will have responsibilities supporting laboratory tasks that may include specimen processing, centrifugation, aliquoting, instrument preparation and loading, low-complexity lab testing, equipment maintenance, and administrative tasks using the hospital and lab information systems. They will also participate in shadowing experiences to observe high-complexity testing in various labs, such as Core Chemistry and Hematology, Toxicology, Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology, Diagnostic Genetics and Genomics, Diagnostic Genetics and Genomics, Histocompatibility, and Anatomic Pathology. 

Purpose
The purpose of our program is to offer undergraduate students an opportunity to work in medical laboratories alongside medical laboratory professionals. This program is geared towards undergraduates who have an interest in science and healthcare to experience working in the medical laboratory setting, explore careers in the medical laboratory, and gain an understanding of the contributions of medical laboratory professionals and the ethos of Michigan Medicine. 

Work Schedule
This 8-week program runs between June-July 2026. Students are employed in a full-time, 40-hours/week Laboratory Technician role through a temp agency and paid $17/hour. Exact dates and hours (days or afternoon) will be shared with the candidate at time of offer.
