Congratulations to our Clinical Graduates!

Each July, a new class of house officers, fellows, and clinical instructors arrive at Michigan Medicine’s Department of Pathology and each June we congratulate those who are graduating. Some will remain at Michigan Medicine in fellowship or faculty positions while others will move on to new opportunities. This year’s graduating class is made up of seven residents, eight fellows and ten clinical instructors. Dr. Charles Parkos, Chair of Pathology, praised this year's graduating class, "I am proud of this class of clinical graduates!  Their contributions to patient care made a huge difference in the face of the COVID pandemic.  Our trainees adapted to a highly variable environment surrounded by uncertainty while negotiating ongoing renovations of our core laboratories at the University Hospital. They proved themselves to be flexible, creative, & committed. Congratulations to a job well done!"

Our graduating residents are:

Jiayun "Margaret" Fang, MD. Margaret will stay on at Michigan Medicine to complete specialty training in gastrointestinal pathology.

Efrain Gutierrez-Lanz, MD. Efrain will continue his training at Michigan Medicine to complete a fellowship in hematopathology and surgical pathology.

Justin Kelley, MD, MPH. As a resident, Justin also completed the Healthcare Equity and Quality Scholar Program (HEQSP, Office of Health Equity and Inclusion) and the Healthcare Administration Scholar Program (HASP, Office of Clinical Affairs). Justin will join Efrain as a hematopathology fellow.

Lauren Kroll-Wheeler, MD. Lauren will be leaving Michigan Medicine to pursue a pediatric pathology fellowship at the University of Colorado.

Tim Miller, MD. Tim is also heading west, to Stanford University, where he will pursue specialty training in hematopathology and molecular genetic pathology.

Catherine Perez, MD. Catherine will continue her training in forensic pathology at Michigan Medicine.

William Perry, MD, MPH. Will served as Chief Resident and will continue his training at Michigan Medicine, as a clinical instructor in thoracic pathology.

 

Our graduating fellows include:

Cytopathology:  Xiaobing Jin, MD, PhD. will further his training at Michigan Medicine as a clinical instructor in surgical pathology, and Mohammed Saad, MBBS will continue his training in gastrointestinal pathology at Indiana University.

Dermatopathology: Yuan Yu “Michael” Huang, MD, is moving to Cleveland, Ohio to serve as a dermatopathologist at the Cleveland Skin Pathology and Metrohealth Medical Center in Ohio. Behzad Salari, MD, has taken a dermatopathology position at Twin Cities Dermatopathology in Plymouth, MN.

Forensic Pathology: Eleftherios "Terry" Vouyoukas, MD, will serve as the Assistant Chief Medical Examiner, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Alberta, Canada.

Hematopathology: Kathryn Gibbons, MD will continue her training as a clinical instructor in surgical pathology at Michigan Medicine, while Ania Owczarczyk, MD, PhD, is heading to the Cleveland Clinic as Pathology Associate Staff.

Molecular Genetic Pathology: Erica Vormittag-Nocito, MD, is moving to Chicago, IL to become the Director, Diagnostic Molecular Biology Laboratory at Northwestern University Medical Group.

 

Finally, our graduating clinical instructors include:

Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology: Douglas Rottman, MD. Douglas has accepted an offer as Assistant Professor of Pathology at Michigan Medicine.

Breast Pathology: Sundis Mahmood, DO will continue training as a clinical instructor in surgical pathology at Michigan Medicine.

Gastrointestinal Pathology: Chelsea Styles, MD, is relocating to the west side of the state as a pathologist for Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, MI.

Genitourinary Pathology: Lucy Ma, MD, has accepted an Assistant Professor appointment at Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and Alex Taylor, MD, will remain at Michigan Medicine to complete a gynecologic pathology fellowship.

Surgical Pathology: Preeti Behl, MD, will serve as a pathologist for the Yosemite Pathology Medical Group in Visalia, CA. Ashley Bradt, DO, Fernanda Cordeiro-Rudinsky, MD, and Cisely Hines, MD, will continue their training at Michigan Medicine in cytopathology, genitourinary pathology, and head & neck pathology respectively.

Thoracic Pathology: Chae Hwa Kim, MD will become a clinical instructor in bone and soft tissue pathology at Michigan Medicine.

Congratulations to all of our clinical trainees! We wish each of you all the best as you continue learning and growing as pathologists wherever you serve. Never forget you are the Leaders and the Best… Go Blue!
