Dear Prospective Residents,
Thanks so much for your interest in our program! We are excited to share with you why we love training here. First, to introduce ourselves — Ashley Brent is the current chief resident, and Isabella (Izzy) Holmes and Sarah Farran are the co-assistant chief residents. Ashley joins us from The Ohio State University, Sarah from The American University of Beirut, and Izzy from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine - Bradenton. As you can see, we’re all transplants to the state of Michigan, and despite interviewing broadly across the country, there are many reasons we each felt Michigan Medicine was the best place to train. We could not help but be drawn to the culture, academic environment, program design, and most importantly, the people at the University of Michigan Department of Pathology.
Residents are an integral part of the Department of Pathology here at Michigan Medicine and are strongly involved in the clinical work and day-to-day anatomic and clinical pathology operations. We see a wide variety of clinical cases, from the “bread and butter,” routine diagnoses to rare entities sent to us for expert consultation. We have prolific clinical and basic science research programs, with ample opportunities for residents to get involved. Additionally, we have numerous fellowship opportunities – for those looking to extend their training here or looking to get additional experience in a field. Our hands-on training, when coupled with traditional didactic learning, produces excellent pathologists who are prepared to work in any practice setting – academic, community, or private.
The quality of life in the Ann Arbor area is another big draw for our residency program. The city and surrounding area are bursting with great restaurants, cultural/arts venues, and peaceful outdoor spaces. We are also just a short commute from Detroit, with all that it has to offer – from professional sports to great museums, and an international airport. For all that the area has to offer, the cost of living is quite affordable; residents can rent or buy depending on their preferences.
Finally, but certainly not least, our fellow Michigan Pathology residents constantly amaze us. They are some of the kindest, funniest, most helpful, and most supportive people that we know, and we are grateful every single day to be working with them. We would love to tell you more about the program, answer any questions you might have, or just get to know you a little bit better. Feel free to reach out to us via the e-mail links below.
