Fang’s abstract, “Transient Elastography versus Liver Biopsy: Discordance in Evaluations for Fibrosis and Steatosis from a Pathology Standpoint,” reported on major discordance in results between Transient Elastography (TE) and Liver Biopsy in 35% of patient cases reviewed (66% in patients with BMI>28). Liver biopsies may be submitted not only for primary diagnosis, Fang concluded, but also to confirm TE fibrosis and steatosis. Fang’s research was conducted with Dr. Maria Westerhoff and several trainees who have since graduated.

The Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society is committed to supporting the growth and development of all liver pathologists in training. Abstracts are judged based on academic merit and/or clinical practice impact and trainees in hepatopathology are awarded each year at the USCAP meeting.
