Drs. Chan and Bresler Co-authored New AFIP Fascicle

By Anastazia Hartman | January 8

Dermatopathologists May Chan, MD, Scott Bresler, MD, PhD, and their colleagues from other academic institutions have contributed to the recently released AFIP Atlases of Tumor and Non-Tumor Pathology: Non-Neoplastic Disorders of the Skin.

This atlas provides a comprehensive, practical resource for diagnosing non-neoplastic dermatologic conditions, reviewing 194 skin disorders, most of which are inflammatory, and classifying them by primary microscopic tissue reaction patterns, aiming to provide a concise, practical, and up-to-date review of these diseases.

A major strength of this book is the extensive collection of high-quality clinical and microscopic images, which clearly illustrate key diagnostic features and enhance pattern recognition. The authors also emphasize the importance of integrating histopathologic findings with clinical history, laboratory data, and ancillary studies, particularly in challenging or ambiguous cases.

Accurate interpretation of non-neoplastic skin biopsies extends beyond microscopic pattern recognition and depends on thoughtful integration of clinical history, laboratory findings, and ancillary studies when available. This book is designed to support pathologists in navigating and confidently diagnosing challenging non-neoplastic skin biopsies.

Congratulations Drs. Chan, Bresler, and colleagues! Your involvement and efforts highlight our department’s strong national presence and leadership in dermatopathology.
