Young, Carol-sq 500.jpgCongratulations to Carol Young, MLS(ASCP), clinical research project manager in microbiology, on her selection as the 2025 American Society of Microbiology’s Scherago-Rubin Award for Clinical Microbiology recipient.

This award recognizes an outstanding bench-level clinical microbiologist involved in routine diagnostic work who has distinguished themself by excellent performance. The award was established by the late Sally Jo Rubin, an active member of ASM's Clinical Microbiology Division, in honor of her grandfather, Professor Morris Scherago.

Dr. Paul Lephart, who nominated Young, stated, “Carol Young is an extraordinary individual whose expertise, passion, leadership and dedication have significantly advanced clinical microbiology at Michigan Medicine and beyond. Her extensive experience, proven engagement, and commitment to education make her an ideal recipient for the ASM Scherago-Rubin Award for Clinical Microbiology. She has dedicated her nearly 50-year career to going above and beyond in the advancement of diagnostic microbiology.”

“I have been fortunate to have the support of the leadership of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory who have allowed me to explore new opportunities, technologies and to be involved in the regional microbiology group (South Central Association for Clinical Microbiology) over the past 50 years of my career,” stated Young. “I think “outside the box” and ask questions about what we are doing and why and are there better solutions.  Dr. Carl Pierson, PhD, encouraged me to submit my first poster to a national meeting in the 1980’s and it was there I saw and learned about opportunities of continuing education, which is a passion of mine.”

Please join us in congratulating Carol Young as the Scherago-Rubin Award for Clinical Microbiology honoree.
