Third-year resident Dr. Lauren J. Miller received the 2024 Dr. Phillip and Sandra Barney Resident Volunteer Service Award from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) at this year’s annual meeting. You may have seen her providing Case of the Week (#COTW) posts or featured in our residency program video, conducting grand rounds, teaching medical students, and other department content. These are just a few ways that her volunteer service has directly and positively impacted our department’s communication efforts as we work to enhance the availability of educational and informative content. Miller is involved in many other volunteer activities both at Michigan Medicine and across multiple professional organizations, as outlined in the press release from the ASCP below. The 2024 Dr. Phillip and Sandra Barney Resident Volunteer Service Award
Third-year pathology resident at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor,
honored during ASCP 2024 Annual Meeting
Chicago/September 5, 2024—The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) today presented
the 2024 Dr. Phillip and Sandra Barney Resident Volunteer Service Award to Lauren J. Miller, MD, MJ, CMQ, CHC, MLS(ASCP)CM during the ASCP 2024 Annual Meeting, held September 3-6, in Chicago.
The Dr. Philip and Sandra Barney Resident Volunteer Service Award recognizes an ASCP resident member who has demonstrated outstanding ASCP volunteer experience.
Dr. Miller is a third-year resident in anatomic & clinical pathology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She joined ASCP in 2016 after completing the Board of Certification and has maintained her MLS certification throughout medical school and into residency. During her first two years of medical school, she worked as a generalist in an ambulatory clinic laboratory and later transitioned to the blood bank at a level one trauma center while pursuing her master's degree.
Upon returning to medical school, Dr. Miller actively educated the clinical teams she worked with on laboratory operations and test result interpretation. Currently, within ASCP, she serves on the Quality and Patient Safety Steering Committee, Laboratory Management University Committee, Social Media Committee, and as a Pathology Ambassador.
In addition to her MLS certification, Dr. Miller holds certifications in healthcare compliance (CHC) and medical quality (CMQ). Additionally, she is pursuing further education in healthcare management through the Health Administration Scholars Program at the University of Michigan.
“I am truly honored to receive this award from ASCP, an organization that unites medical laboratory professionals and pathologists to work together to improve the delivery of quality patient care,” Dr. Miller says. “I am proud to be a part of this organization and delighted to give back to the profession which reinforces my purpose to serve the needs of patients.”
Passionate about quality improvement and healthcare regulation, she aims to combine her experiences as a medical laboratory scientist, pathologist, and compliance professional to design projects, lead teams, and implement initiatives to improve test utilization and patient outcomes. Dr. Miller enjoys collaborating with other medical specialties and advocating for greater visibility of the laboratory within the healthcare landscape. She has published articles on implementing large language models in pathology practice, the impact and future directions of telemedicine, and the utility of fluorescence in-situ hybridization as ancillary testing with biliary brushing cytology. Her work earned her recognition as a 2023 ASCP 40 Under Forty honoree.
Outside of ASCP, Dr. Miller continues to serve and advocate for pathologists and laboratorians. Her volunteer roles include serving as a member of the Technical Standards Committee for the Association for Pathology Informatics, a junior member of the Ethics and Conduct Committee for the American Society of Cytopathology, a representative of the Association for Academic Pathology for the American Association of Medical Colleges Organization of Resident Representatives, Chair of the Michigan Medicine House Officer Quality and Safety Committee, and resident representative on the Michigan Medicine Accreditation and Regulatory Readiness Council and Transfusion Committee.
After residency, Dr. Miller will pursue a cytopathology fellowship at the University of Michigan. She intends to practice in both anatomic and clinical pathology with a focus on healthcare administration, medical quality, and regulatory affairs.
She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dr. Miller earned a Master of Jurisprudence in health law with a certificate in compliance studies from Loyola University Chicago and attained her Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin.
