UMHS Department of Pathology Unique Educational Opportunities

Chemistry Laboratory

Chemistry Lab.jpeg

  • State of the art automation line that processes 9 million samples a year
  • Laboratory Developed Tests (LDTs) utilizing GC, GCMS, LCMS and HPLC instrumentation
  • Toxicology and Special Chemistry sections not offered in smaller hospitals

Immunology Laboratory

  • Autoantibody testing, protein electrophoresis, viscosity measurement, cryoglobulin evaluation and syphilis serology utilizing a variety of methodologies including: enzyme immunoassay, indirect immunofluorescence, high resolution protein electrophoresis, immunofixation and nephelometry
  • Laboratory lead by world renowned experts in the field
  • Dr. Karen’s book on protein electrophoresis is considered “the reference” on the topic

Hematology Laboratory

New Hematology Lab.jpeg

  • Offers a high volume of automated testing (about 2,000 CBC’s per day), differential counting of peripheral blood smears,  body fluid analysis, as well as many specialized assay
  • CellaVision® automation for peripheral blood smear and body fluid analysis

Coagulation

  • Offers more than 40 coagulation tests, including platelet aggregation studies, monitoring of new anti-coagulants, and factor assay
  • Methodologies include: immuno-turbidometric, chromogenic, ELISA, RID, fluorometry, and agglutination methodologies

Flow Cytometry

  • CD34 stem cell analysis for transplant patients
  • CD4/CD8 testing to monitor patients with HIV
  • Immunophenotypic analysis on a variety of sample types to rule out leukemia and lymphoma
  • 10-color technology for detection of minimal residual disease in Multiple Myeloma, ability to collect over 1,000,000 events for analysis with a reportable sensitivity level of .001%
  • Rare genetic acquired disease analysis (such as Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria)

Bone Marrows

  • Assist medical staff with the collection of bone marrow on the patient floor
  • Perform cytochemical staining to differentiate leukemia subtype
  • Perform 500 count bone marrow differentials

Microbiology Laboratory

Microbiology Lab.jpeg

  • MALDI-TOF technology for identification of bacteria
  • Microscopes with digital displays for teaching and consults
  • Our patient population and number of specimens allows us to see some of the rarer organisms such as Coccidioides and Mycobacterium haemophilum, as well as being one of the first hospitals to notice an outbreak
  • 24/7 PCR testing for respiratory viruses
  • In the event of a novel outbreak such as the flu in 2009, U of M can quickly acquire instrumentation to provide quick and accessible patient care

Blood Bank Laboratory

  • Complex Antibody Identification
  • Neonatal & Intrauterine Transfusion
  • Peripheral Stem Cell Collection & Cellular Therapy

  • Utilization of a growing menu of over 45 lab developed and FDA approved assays for the detection and identification of mutations in hematologic cancers, solid tumors, and constitutional genetics
  • Assay methods include Real Time PCR, Fragment Analysis, Sanger Sequencing, Invader®, and Next Generation Sequencing
  • In lab histology bench and tumor review
  • Nucleic acid extraction from blood, bone marrow, paraffin embedded tissue, fresh tissue, stained cytology smears (and more)
  • Sub-specialty FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) department performing testing on paraffin-embedded tissue samples to aid in the detection of gene rearrangements and amplification
  • Greater than 17,000 tests performed annually with an average test turn-around time of 4.7 days

Histocompatibility Laboratory

  • Offers a full range of histocompatibility assays, including Class I and II HLA typing, Class I and II antibody identification, flow cytometric crossmatching, and other specialty testing
  • Supports the hospital Solid Organ Transplant, Hematopoeitic Cell Transplant, and Transfusion programs
