We invite you to attend the 11th Clinical Pathology Symposium. The symposium is for all pathology faculty and staff and includes an amazing program of topics that will be interesting to everyone illustrating the laboratory's impact on patient care via laboratory case studies. We hope that you find the symposium a rewarding and educational experience that you can share with your colleagues.

(Re)Connection: Building Community and Resilience

High-quality relationships are an important part of well-being. After many changes in how we socialize, how can we rebuild meaningful connections? In this session, participants will recognize how empathy and positive connections contribute to resilience and participate in an activity that invites reflection and story-sharing about sources of strength. Basic level of instruction, 1 contact hour. (PATH-45100)

  • Describe skills to help enhance empathy and develop a sense of community in the workplace.
  • Identify sources of personal and professional strength, resilience, and meaning through facilitated discussion.
  • Create supportive connections with colleagues through storytelling and reflective practice.

Batsakis Lecture: Immunity-associated with SARS-C0V-2 (IASO) Cohort Study

The Immunity-associated with SARS-CoV-2 (IASO) Cohort Study was established in October 2020 with UM employees as study participants and Michigan Medicine clinical laboratories testing and lab medicine expertise. Study design and establishment during the ongoing pandemic and the early results from the study, including the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination, will be discussed. Basic level of instruction, 1 contact hour. (PATH-45200)

Event Objective:

  • Define a cohort study and explain the advantages of a cohort study over non-longitudinal study designs.
  • Explain differences in the antibody response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and infection.
  • Describe neutralization testing and how it is used to monitor emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Next Generation Sequencing Primer and Future Direction of Molecular Diagnostics

Molecular Diagnostics continues to grow at a rapid pace reaching all areas of medicine. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has become an everyday tool for a wide range of applications. This talk will provide an informative overview of nucleic acid testing focusing on infectious disease and neoplasia. Intermediate level of instruction, 1 contact hour. (PATH-45300)

Event Objective:

  • Summarize the similarities and differences between “first-generation” and “next-generation” sequencing.
  • Categorize different clinical applications for next-generation sequencing.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of multiplex nucleic acid testing.
