Earlier this month, the Department of Pathology celebrated this year's graduating residents and fellows with family and friends at the Resident and Fellow Farewell Celebration. An annual event that recognizes the years of dedication, learning, and service as trainees prepare to embark on the next chapter of their medical careers.
Assistant Chair of Education, Kamran Mirza, MD, PhD, and Department Chair, Charles Parkos, MD, PhD, welcomed attendees and congratulated the graduates on their accomplishments. Mirza recognized the commitment and hard work demonstrated by the graduating residents, fellows, and advanced clinical trainees throughout their training. Fellowship directors then introduced each graduating fellow and advanced clinical trainee and presented certificates marking the completion of their programs.
Pathology Residency Associate Program Director, David Manthei, MD, PhD, honored the senior residents and presented their certificates of completion.
Resident Awards Recognize Excellence
Lee Schroeder, MD, PhD, Director of Clinical Pathology, presented the John Batsakis & Ronald Nishiyama Outstanding Clinical Pathology Resident Award to Lauren Miller, MD, MJ, an AP/CP resident.
"I’m honored to be recognized amongst an incredible group of residents. I would like to thank the faculty whose insights and guidance continually pushed me to grow in both knowledge and skill. My success would not be possible without numerous collaborations with my talented colleagues across the department and the unwavering support of my family."

Stephanie Skala, MD, announced Chia-Ming (Jimmy) Lee, DO, an AP/NP resident, as the recipient of the Murray R. Abell Outstanding Anatomic Pathology Resident Award.
“It is a great honor to receive the AP Resident Award. I love all the faculty, staff, and my co-residents, who together harbor such a supportive and fun learning environment. I couldn’t ask for a better residency experience, and I look forward to continuing learning and working in the department.”

The Residents Teaching Award, which honors the faculty member whom residents believe made the most significant contribution to their education, was presented by Jared Neeley, MD, and Benjamin Telford, DO, assistant chief residents for the 2026-2027 academic year. The award was given to Jennifer M. Jones, MD.
In addition to her Resident Teaching Award, Dr. Jones was honored with the Clinical Pathology Undergraduate Medical Education Award, and Allecia M. Wilson, MD, received the Anatomic Pathology Undergraduate Medical Education Award.
Closing out the evening, Andrew Valesano, MD, PhD (2026-2027 Chief Resident) recognized his co-chief residents, Sarah Farran, MD, and Isabella Holmes, DO, for their service as the chief residents for the past academic year, recounting the amazing work they accomplished and what fantastic role models they are to follow as he ascends to this year’s chief resident.
The Department of Pathology congratulates all graduating trainees and wishes them continued success as they advance their careers and serve patients worldwide.
