Steven Kunkel, PhD, appointed as Interim Executive Vice Dean for Research and Chief Scientific Officer

The board of regents has appointed Steven Kunkel, PhD, as the interim executive vice dean for research and chief scientific officer, effective October 1st.

Kunkel is the Endowed Professor in Pathology Research and Peter A. Ward Distinguished University Professor. He joined the university in 1980 and has served as the senior associate dean for research at the Medical School since 2007.

Having maintained continuous funding of major National Institutes of Health grants for over three decades, Kunkel’s research focuses on assessing molecular mechanisms of lung inflammation by investigating cytokine directed cell-to-cell communication circuits. He has co-authored more than 600 peer-reviewed manuscripts, edited four books, and is currently the co-chair of the Board of Scientific Counselors for the NIAID-NIH.
