Drs. Westerhoff and Kakar Lead New Edition of Diagnostic Pathology: Hepatobiliary and Pancreas

Dr. Maria Westerhoff with her book.Dr. Maria Westerhoff, alongside Co-Lead Author Dr. Sanjay Kakar of the University of California, San Francisco, has captured the latest advancements in gastrointestinal pathology in the newly published fourth edition of Diagnostic Pathology: Hepatobiliary and Pancreas. Published by Elsevier, the full-color textbook is now available as a comprehensive, expertly curated guide to one of the most challenging areas in pathology.

Taking the reins from Dr. Laura Lamps, who guided earlier editions of the text and co-edited the third edition alongside Dr. Westerhoff, the fourth edition brings a wealth of updated information to pathologists and clinicians alike.

"It is a privilege to carry forward the work Dr. Lamps established with this text," Westerhoff shared. "Her extraordinary collection of cases has been an invaluable educational resource throughout my years at U-M, and her generosity in sharing that knowledge with the field cannot be overstated. I owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude."

Navigating a Complex Field

Hepatobiliary and pancreas pathology is notoriously difficult, largely due to the complexity of histologic diagnoses and the rapid evolution of diagnostic technologies.

To address these challenges, the fourth edition encompasses the latest industry standards, including the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 6th edition updates on digestive system tumors. The book also provides critical insights into the recent explosion of molecular testing, ensuring that practitioners have the most up-to-date information for patient care.

Designed for Practicality and Speed

Illustrative pages of Diagnostic Pathology: Hepatobiliary and Pancreas. One of the most notable features of the new edition is its highly accessible format. The text moves away from dense narratives in favor of an easy to digest, bulleted outline structure designed to support pathologists in varying environments, from high-pressure clinical moments to intensive academic study.

Each chapter begins with a "Key Facts" summary box, allowing clinicians to find vital information immediately. If a deeper understanding is required, readers can continue into the text for comprehensive details on pathogenesis and disease nuances.

Westerhoff emphasizes the dual utility of this layout:

"We designed this volume to serve as both a rapid reference and a useful educational resource. The format allows a pathologist facing an urgent situation to find critical diagnostic information quickly, while also offering the depth needed for those seeking a more comprehensive understanding of disease pathogenesis and diagnostic nuance. It is equally suited to the demands of daily practice and to sustained academic study."

A Collaborative Effort by Leading Experts

To bring this comprehensive resource to life, Westerhoff collaborated with Co-Lead Author Dr. Sanjay Kakar and a team of highly prominent contributors from top medical institutions across the country, including:

  • Dr. Alyssa Krasinskas (Emory)
  • Dr. Rondell Graham (Mayo Clinic)
  • Dr. Nicole Panarelli (Cornell)
  • Dr. Romil Saxena (Emory)
  • Dr. Hanlin Wang (UCLA)
  • Dr. Wei Zheng (Emory)

"It was an honor to collaborate with such distinguished colleagues," Westerhoff said of the contributing experts. "Reading their chapters was itself an education. The group brought remarkable cohesion to the project, and the experience of working together was truly rewarding."

The textbook is further enhanced by Elsevier's team of medical illustrators who contributed beautiful, accurate explanatory diagrams which bring complex concepts into clear focus and complement the high-quality histology and gross photographs.
