Thoracic Pathology Fellowship

Our fellowship program is designed to nurture the diagnostic, scientific and communication skills essential for success as a pathology practitioner with special interest and expertise in thoracic diseases. This one-year program emphasizes histopathologic diagnosis, the importance of multidisciplinary care, and effective scientific thinking. Opportunities exist for additional training in a basic research setting depending on the interests and career goals of the applicant.

Jeffrey Myers is the most senior member of our group who credits his friend, colleague and mentor Anna-Luise Katzenstein with his interest in thoracic pathology. He was also privileged to work with colleagues who are household names in our discipline including Tom Colby, Henry Tazelaar, Andras Khoor, and Marie-Christine Aubry. Junior members of our Michigan Medicine team include Kristine Konopka and Tao Huang who have quickly distinguished themselves as among the very best of our current generation of thoracic pathology practitioners. Working with some of the world’s most distinguished pulmonologists, radiologists, surgeons and oncologists they provide a uniquely enriching environment for our trainees who function as integral members of our team. Our program has over a decade of success in training fellows for careers in academic and/or community practice as evidenced by the list of our graduates.

At its core our curriculum includes a robust combination of both institutional and consultation cases covering a diverse range of problems in neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases affecting lung, mediastinum and pleura. Our thoracic surgery colleagues perform numerous anatomic lung resections, wedge resections, mediastinal procedures, pleural resections and biopsies. Our transplant program averages over two dozen lung transplants annually. Our consultation practice sees over 2,500 cases per year covering a breadth of neoplastic and non-neoplastic thoracic diseases.

Fellows will work closely with faculty who have expertise in diagnostic thoracic pathology, a track record of academic achievement, and a strong commitment to education. Partnering with colleagues in divisions and departments of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Radiology, Thoracic Surgery, and Oncology our fellows have numerous opportunities for participation in multidisciplinary patient care conferences and collaborative projects.

At the conclusion of this fellowship, graduates will be well positioned for successful careers in any academic or community practice setting. 

This program is not ACGME accredited.

 

Teaching Objectives

Orientation of Thoracic Pathology Fellows

  • The fellow will participate in all institutional and departmental orientation sessions required of incoming trainees
  • The fellow will be presented with this description and objectives (see separate document)
  • The fellow will be oriented to the thoracic pathology teaching collection and other unique features of the fellowship (see separate document)

 

Requirements:
Applicants must be board certified or eligible in Anatomic Pathology by the beginning of the fellowship and be eligible for a license in the State of Michigan.  Applicants must be US citizens, permanent residents or pending permanent residents/EAD approved. J-1 visas are not eligible.

Stipends:
Salary will be commensurate with the candidate's level of training.
