A. James French Lecturer

John Hart, MD
Professor of Pathology University of Chicago
Dr. John Hart graduated from the University of Iowa Medical School in 1986. He did his pathology residency at U.C.L.A. Medical Center, followed by a Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Pathology fellowship at the same institution. In 1991 he joined the faculty of the University of Chicago Department of Pathology as an assistant professor, and rose to the rank of full professor in 2004. He is the chief of the Gastrointestinal and Hepatology Pathology section and director of the fellowship program. The fellowship has graduated more than 15 GI pathologists who are now working in leading academic pathology departments throughout the United States and Canada. Dr. Hart has published more than 200 articles in the fields of gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology and has also authored numerous book chapters. He has lectured throughout the United States and in Europe and Asia. He currently is a member of the Board of Directors Executive Committee of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and is the current president of the Rodger Haggitt Gastrointestinal Pathology Society. He is a co-author of the upcoming non-neoplastic liver pathology AFIP fascicle to be published by ARP Press.

Kathleen T. Montone, MD
Professor of Pathology Perelman School of Medicine University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Montone is currently the Director of the Division of Anatomic Pathology and is a Professor, Clinician Educator track in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Montone graduated from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, did her residency in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Pennsylvania and remained as faculty in the Surgical Pathology Section. In 2011, Dr. Montone was selected to be the Chief of the Surgical Pathology Section and in 2014 was selected to also oversee the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Residency Program. She subsumed the Director of Anatomic Pathology position in 2015. Dr. Montone has a National and International reputation in head and neck and infectious disease pathology with over 160 peer reviewed publications and book chapters. She is on the editorial board for American Journal of Clinical Pathology and Endocrine Pathology and has been an ad hoc reviewer for over 40 different journals. Within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Dr. Montone has received the Kevin Salhany Resident Teaching Award, The James Wheeler Teaching in Anatomic Pathology and the Chairman’s Award Distinguished Service. In the Perelman School of Medicine, Dr. Montone was elected to the Perelman School of Medicine Academy of Master Clinicians and recently was the recipient of the Robert Dunning Dripps Award for Graduate Medical Education.

Victor E. Reuter, MD
Professor of Pathology Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) New York City
Dr. Reuter is presently Vice-Chairman of the Department of Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York City where he has served since 1983, and Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. His major administrative duties in his department reside in technology and innovation as it applies to anatomic pathology, including implementing automation in the histology laboratory and the implementation of whole slide imaging in diagnostic surgical pathology. He is a practicing surgical pathologist with interests in neoplasms of the urogenital tract. He is the leader of the Genitourinary Pathology Team at Memorial as well as Director of the Genitourinary Pathology Subspecialty Fellowship and the Genitourinary Pathology Research laboratory. He is Co-Director of the Pathology Core of two NIH/NCI sponsored SPOREs in Prostate and Bladder Cancer at MSKCC. He served as Co-Chair of the NCI Kidney Cancer Clinical Trials Task Force. He is past President of the Medical Staff at MSKCC, past Chairman of the Education Committee and President of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology as well as Vice-President for North America of the International Academy of Pathology. In addition to multiple resident and fellow teaching awards, he received the Koss Medal from the International Society of Urological Pathology for “eminent services in the advancement of urological pathology”, the Harvey Goldman distinguished teaching and mentoring award from the Unites States and Canadian Academy of Pathology as well as the F.K. Mostofi Distinguished Service award. In 2015 the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center honored him with the William O. Russell Lectureship and Joanne Vandenberge Hill Award for “outstanding achievement in pathology”. He is co-editor of the 2016 (4th edition) of the World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Urinary System and Male Genital Organs.

David Lucas, MD
A. James French Professor and Director of Anatomic Pathology University of Michigan
Dr. David Lucas received his M.D. from Wayne State University in 1988. After Pathology residency training at Wayne State University (1998-1991), he spent two years as a Surgical and Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology Fellow at the Mayo Clinic (1991-1993). In 1993, he accepted a faculty position at Wayne State University, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2000, and worked there until 2003. Dr. Lucas was Course Director for the sophomore Connective Tissue Unit at Wayne State University from 1995-2003 and Director of Immunohistochemistry at the Detroit Medical Center from 2000-2003.
Dr. Lucas joined the faculty of the University of Michigan of Pathology Department in 2003 and was promoted to Professor in 2006. He is an expert consultant in Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology. He served as Director of Immunohistochemistry from 2006-2010, Director of Surgical Pathology from 2010-2015, and Program Director of the Surgical Pathology Fellowship from 2010-2015. Dr. Lucas was appointed Director of Anatomic Pathology in December 2015. He is author of 120 peer-reviewed publications, co-authored two editions of Diagnostic Pathology of Soft Tissue Tumors (2011 and 2016), and wrote multiple book chapters and abstracts. He has given various extramural invited presentations at local, national, and international venues, and has participated as study pathologist on multiple clinical trials.

Lauren Smith, MD
Director of Hematopathology University of Michigan
Dr. Lauren Smith received her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan Honors College with highest distinction in 1992. She spent four years working in a neurogenetics laboratory at the University of San Francisco with Dr. Nelson Freimer. For the next two years she worked as a manuscript editor for Dr. Donald Klein, a psychiatrist, at Columbia University. In 1998, she began medical school at the University of Michigan. She was awarded AOA in her junior year and was president of the UM AOA Chapter the following year. She completed her residency in anatomic/clinical pathology and fellowship in hematopathology from 2002-2007.
In July, 2007 she began her faculty career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013. She was appointed Fellowship Director in 2013. She was appointed the Director of the Ethics Path of Excellence in the University of Michigan Medical School in 2013. She became the permanent Director of the Hematopathology Section in 2016. In addition, she serves as a Hospital Ethicist at Michigan Medicine.

Maria Westerhoff, MD
Associate Professor Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Pathology University of Michigan
Dr. Westerhoff graduated from the Guaranteed Professional Program Admissions and Honors College of University of Illinois-Chicago and received her medical degree in 2006. She then completed her pathology residency and fellowship in gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology at the University of Chicago in 2011. She was a faculty member at the University of Washington from 2011, where she was promoted to associate professor in 2016.
Dr. Westerhoff joined the University of Michigan in 2017. She is the chair of the education committee of the Rodger Haggitt Gastrointestinal Pathology Society, education committee member of the Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society, a member of the Laennec Society, and member of the congress scientific advisory board of the World Organization for Specialized Studies on Diseases of the Esophagus (OESO).
