About Split and the Region

The beautiful city of Split, situated on the coast of the Adriatic Sea (in the region of Dalmatia), is the second-largest city in Croatia and is a popular tourist destination. Split has a rich history, dating back to the times of the Roman Emperor Diocletian who built his palace on the peninsula.  The Diocletian Palace remains one of the greatest historical treasures of Croatia and is the pride of the city. In addition to its rich cultural and historic heritage, Split (and the entire region of Dalmatia) is also famous for its beautiful beaches, clean water, excellent food, and entertainment.  For those that want to explore beyond the city, the options are endless.  The City of Dubrovnik is approximately 130 miles south of Split.  The islands of Brac and Hvar, two gems of the Adriatic, are just a short boat ride away. A number of famous national parks, such as Krka with its waterfalls or the Kornati archipelago, are also readily accessible.
